Constructed Romance

Constructed Romance is the first chapter in an ongoing exploration of how we experience a city and the meanings we associate with it.

I chose Paris because of its strong collective association with romance. I began researching the places, stories and traditions that have shaped this image of Paris. Along the way, I became fascinated by how such a feeling can develop over time.

Constructed Romance explores how romance has become connected to Paris through the ways in which people experience, remember and imagine the city. The paintings create new spaces in which these associations and feelings can be experienced. The series invites the viewer to wander through the paintings and discover from their own perspective what the romantic feeling of Paris means to them.
