Lindsey van der Vorm

I am Lindsey van der Vorm, a Dutch visual artist and information scientist based in Breda. With a background in Communication & Multimedia Design and Information Sciences, I developed strong visual and analytical skills for making sense of the world around us.

 

My natural curiosity about why certain places, ideas or moments acquire a particular meaning, both personally and collectively, continuously leads me to new subjects to study. I am repeatedly fascinated by the complex tension between strength and vulnerability: something can appear strong, self-evident or enduring, while at the same time being dependent on time, human choices and attention. These layers are not necessarily visible and can sometimes be difficult to put into words. The intuitive, contemplative world of organic abstract painting offers me a way to make this meaning accessible and to explore it in a different way.

My work begins with in-depth research into a subject and the collection of the stories that have formed around it, such as rituals, symbolism and imagery. From analysing this ‘input’, a perspective on the underlying meaning of the work emerges. I then translate this concept into a painting through sketches and studies. Nature is an important source of inspiration and visual language in this process. The organic forms and structures on the canvas often evoke a garden or landscape of leaves, clouds, water and movement. Together, they form a new space in which a story unfolds and where, as a viewer, you can wander through it.
